HTTP and SOCKS proxies, what the difference?

Just as the title says. Ive been a bit curious about this and was hoping someone can help me out. What in your case is the better type, SOCKS or HTTP? What’s the real difference between them? When would you choose one over the other?

Hi, @Shannonymiss

It really just depends on the use case. SOCKS proxies can handle any type of traffic which includes HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and SMTP. This makes them kore versatile, especially for email, file transfers, and peer-to-peer networks. They also support UDP and TCP protocols which makes them fantastic for streaming or online gaming. SOCKS do not interfere with your data as they simply pass the data between you and your server, giving them a higher level of anonymity than HTTP.

However when it comes to HTTP proxies, they can handle both HTTP and HTTPs traffic, making them ideal for web browsing, content filtering, and caching. They are highly efficient for web scraping as well as accessing geo-restricted content, so if that if the main use case for you, they would be recommended over SOCKS.

If you are using proxies for torrenting, gaming, or any situation where tunnel traffic is a priority, SOCKS would be the way to go. If you wish to access restricted websites or do some web scraping, then HTTP would be a more suited choice.
